Liverpool was made internationally famous by The Beatles in the 1960s, and since then it has been the centre of pop music not only in the UK but globally. Since The Beatles were first discovered in a small nightclub called The Cavern, Liverpool has not been shy about boasting about their most famous ‘sons’, they even named the airport after John Lennon! But Liverpool is much more than just the place where The Beatles are from…

If you ask any British person about Liverpool, they will probably say three words - music, football and comedy. After years watching the two teams from Manchester winning all the trophies and getting all the glory, Liverpool has experienced some huge success lately, including winning the Champions League in 2019. This has, obviously, not been enjoyed so much by the city’s other hugely popular Premier League team, Everton, who are having a new multi-million pound stadium built as part of a plan to become as successful as their neighbours and bitter rivals. As for comedy, Scousers, as people from Liverpool are known, are famous for their cheeky sense of humour and love of playing pranks on people. The city has produced some of the country’s greatest comedians and comedy writers, including Jimmy Tarbuck, John Bishop and Carla Lane.

These days, however, Liverpool is becoming a great place to invest. With property costing half as much as it does in London, people are flocking to Liverpool in their droves lately. With a new high-speed rail link to Manchester being built, London only two hours away if you need to get to the capital, and ferries that go to Dublin and Belfast from the famous old port, people are seeing that Liverpool is the place to be these days. Huge amounts of investment have been poured into the city over the past five years as part of the Northern Powerhouse initiative, which is giving Northern cities like Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds a new lease of life and propelling them up the rankings of the best places in Europe to live and work.

With a population of 495,000, Liverpool is the 4th largest city in the UK and its population is predicted to grow over the next ten years as more and more people move up from the more expensive South or into the city from the surrounding towns and villages. With modern offices and riverfront apartments, with views over the River Mersey, being built alongside more famous old buildings like the Liver Building, with its two liver birds on its roof, Liverpool is becoming a fantastic place to set up home. So why not take a trip to Liverpool? There’s one thing that’s guaranteed, you will definitely have an amazing time!

Affordable Housing - the ADB and Lessons from the UK

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) recently released a briefing paper attempting to
learn lessons from the UK as to successes and failures of affordable housing policy. It is
justifiable to critique the UK’s faltering policy of delivery over a number of decades, but
this is precisely why it is a fruitful area of enquiry from analysts considering other parts
of the world. The UK has benefitted from significant resources, and policymakers have
been under considerable pressure from the electorate to ensure adequate housing across tenures. This is why the Chief of the Urban Sector Group at the ADB, Manoj Sharma, saw fit to commission this work, and report on its conclusions.
