Leeds Country Way

What better way to acquaint yourself with the countryside around Leeds than by doing this circular walking route, which passes through picturesque villages, parks, woodlands and - most importantly - takes in several quaint country pubs. At 62 miles long it might be a bit too far to do in one day, but fear not - it’s easy to walk it in sections thanks to easy public transport from the city centre.

Ilkley Moor

Under an hour’s journey from Leeds will bring you to Ilkley Moor, a stunning stretch of heather and bracken-covered moorlands with spectacular views. History buffs can walk to some of the prehistoric sites scattered around the area, including neolithic carvings and standing stones, while those of a less enquiring mind can refresh themselves with a local ale and a burger at the Cow & Calf pub, named after one of the area’s most famous landmarks.

Harewood House

Built in the 18th century, Harewood House has it all - an art collection to rival the best in Europe, incredible interiors featuring exquisite furniture, and over 100 acres of beautiful gardens, designed by Capability Brown. Once families have enjoyed spending time with the flamingos and the penguins in the Rare Bird garden, there’s more animal fun to be had at the Farm Experience, where you can get up close and personal with alpacas, goats and pigs.

Otley Chevin Forest Park

If you love to keep active then Otley Chevin Forest Park is the place for you! Only half an hour from Leeds, there are a plethora of activities on offer, from walking to cycling and horse riding. The park’s north-facing cliff offers superb views over the Wharfe Valley; for the adventurous, why not try a spot of bouldering or climbing? There are also orienteering routes, and dogs are welcome, so your furry friend doesn’t need to feel left out.

Temple Newsam House

It’s hard to believe such a beautiful place could be so close to Leeds City Centre - but only a ten minute drive will bring you to the park, lakes, and gardens of Temple Newsam House, a Tudor-Jacobean mansion filled with treasures. Take a tour of the house to learn the secrets of this historic home, visit the Home Farm to meet rare breeds, or stroll through the Rhododendron Walk and Walled Garden.
