In Charleston, South Carolina, you are spoiled for choice with stunning sandy beaches. This port city is blessed with some of the best coastlines outside of Florida. Try the city’s favourites in the summer for the sense of community, or hop in the car and drive just out of town for a more secluded feel. From family-friendly to picturesque, there are so many beaches to choose from. Grab your beach bag and your sunglasses before checking out our guide to the city’s best beaches.

Kiawah Beachwalker Park

Kiawah Island is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful barrier islands off the coast of South Carolina. Sporting over 10 miles of pristine coastline, the views are stunning. Whilst many of the beaches are private property with real estate here venturing into the millions of dollars, there are a few public options that will still take your breath away. Head to the southwestern area of the island for the soft, white sand beaches that won’t break the bank. To maintain the beaches, its wildlife and the amenities, there is a small entrance fee between $5 and $10, so make sure your swimsuit has pockets for your wallet!

Folly Beach

Arguably Charleston’s most iconic waterfront, Folly Beach is a popular destination for city residents and tourists alike. This barrier island is blessed with uninterrupted views of the Atlantic stretching across the pond to Europe and Africa, hence its nickname, ‘Edge of America’. The island carries a charming, small-town feel with independent restaurants and family-owned businesses constituting the majority of the retail and entertainment establishments on the island. Head to the unmissable Folly Pier, which extends over 1000 feet into the Atlantic, for panoramic views of the great blue, dazzling sunshine and a café or two. Folly pier is a popular spot with amateur anglers, so visit the bait and tackle shop on the pier for all your fishing supplies.

Isle of Palms

Isle of Palms is one of the area’s most family-friendly beaches by reputation thanks to its amiable local community. The stunning 7 miles of coastline runs along the crystal waters of the Atlantic, with wildlife in abundance. Catch a glimpse of the sea-turtles during their egg-laying season for an unforgettable moment with nature. Hit up the surf shops nearby for all your watersport rental needs. If you don’t have little ones to look after, the Windjammer Beach Bar is a great spot for an evening cocktail overlooking the glistening ocean at sunset.

Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan’s Island comes alive during the touristy summer season when families from all over the US descend on Charleston for its beautiful weather, great restaurants and community spirit. A short drive out of Charleston, continue across the Ravenel Bridge after which marshlands and grassy wetlands subside to reveal this stunning public beach, overlooked by a historic lighthouse. The beach buzzes with people during low-tide in the summer so check the forecast before you come to make sure there’s enough space. For more of Charleston’s rich history, head down to Poe’s Tavern on Middle Street, named after the famous poet Edgar Allen Poe who was on military service here during the early 19th century.

Edisto Beach

The furthest out from Charleston that we have listed here but well worth the slightly longer drive. The relatively quiet, 4 mile stretch of beach is known for its family-friendly facets such as a shallow decline into the water, making it perfect for letting the children play safely while you relax in the blissful sunshine. To keep the kids entertained, you could even visit Jeremy’s Inlet, a small area hit by shallow tides that frequently washes up fossils, shark teeth and other interesting treasures of the sea.
